iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera Control Button Issues

Trying to use the camera control button on iPhone 16 Pro Max for the last few days, IOS 18.0.1...After several hundred tries have come to the conclusion that the double tap simply does not work - at least not as advertised. The best way I have found to double tap for the options is using the middle finger to tap and letting the index finger control the Touch Bar (camera is landscaped). Problem is, the options take FOREVER to come up, rendering it almost useless. The only use I've found for the Camera button is opening the app, shutter for landscape, and maybe controlling the f-stop (or another option with the slide bar). But to quickly switch between say f-stop and zoom, or camera, no way. If anyone has a technique that works, love to hear it. Thank you.
