Tried to restore to factory settings to get rid of 9 year old files. Worked until it had an error in deleting files because it said another setting was using the drive. Locked up after the "choose drive"; chose MacHD, hung up; restarted and used the "option+Command+P+R" to startup. Stuck in a cycle of apple logo and "your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key. . . .

Start with this...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Tried for 30 minutes, continues to do the same thing. Should I just take it to a tech to resolve? I don't want to turn it in for recycling if I can't remove the files first. I did get a circle with a line through the middle once in awhile.
Thanks for your assistance and help. I have a new iMac, but just wanted to take the old one back to factory to delete my previous files.
