Can't access images when searching by place in Photos (Ventura)

Using Photos on an M1 Macbook running Ventura.

I am searching for images by the place they are taken in Photos. Using the Sidebar – Places – Map. The images I'm looking for come up where I think they should be using the Map, all really straightforward.

Except it's not because I can't access these images or find any information about them in the map. I used to (in Monterey and before) be able to get round this problem by clicking the grid button and just the images shown in the map area would come up and I could access them as normal. This isn't happening anymore. Instead Grid shows all my images by date. All 25,000+ of them.

Is this Ventura or is there something going wrong here that I can fix? Of course it would be so much easier if Apple updated Photos so that you can access the images by clicking on the map, but failing that, how do I get the Grid view to work again? Or is there another way? And if not, what's the point of searching by places?

Thank you for these suggestions.

After trying a few things as you suggested (safe mode and I unplugged accessories), it looks like it might be a conflict with my Wacom Intuos tablet. Double-click doesn't zoom in or access photos with it on. But it does work without it (revelation!) Could this be what's happening?

So I can make it work by removing my tablet – which is a lot better news than rebuilding my Photos library! Thanks

Double click on the photos at your chosen lotion and it will bring up all of the photos taken at that location. You can then get the Info pane for selected photos for the info you need. Then the back arrow in the Photos top menu bar will take you back to the map:

If it's not working for you like that giv this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Have you tried these things?

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

I may be misinterpreting your problem (and I'm using Sequoia-- it's been a while since I've used Ventura,) but when I use Map to look at England, I get a bunch of places, like this:

There are 1700 pictures in London. If I double click on London a couple of times, I get this:

With 1000 pictures in Westminster. If I single click on Westminster, I get

with pictures of the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. If I had single clicked in the top version, I would have seen pictures from all over the UK, Ireland, and France.

What exactly is happening with your Map?

Have you looked at your Login Items? (Just search Login Items or "Open at Login" in System Settings) Your tablet may turn on some software automatically that interferes with the System. I have 0 items in my Login Items, which I think is the perfect number. It would be better to just turn on the software when you need it, and turn it off, afterward.

Stuff seems to sneak in there when you're not looking…

Thanks for this.

I'm not able to zoom in by double clicking, and that last click, which looks like it gets you into the grid, doesn't work either. So that's a problem.

Even without this though, if I have zoomed in enough, if I click on the grid button, I would expect to see only the few photos I've zoomed in on. Instead it's all of them.
