Emoji & Symbols Wrong Search Language

I rarely use emojis to their conversational purpose.

However, I do use them as a label to topics.

This was my failed attempt at an intriguing introduction...

With that out of the way, on macOS Sequoia (15.0) the Emoji & Symbols search bar now uses Input Language instead of the System Language.

That means that if you're like me and like to have the system in English but live in other country and usually have your keyboard's layout following your native language you'll be forced to search for emojis in that language and not English.

This is particularly bad because it does not provide a smooth experience at all and really seems like a bug since it makes little sense to have the whole system in one language and out of nowhere have to go back to typing in your own language (whilst talking to your computer).

Obviously buying an English layout keyboard is out of the question because I obviously talk to people I know in my native language.

If you want to reproduce this issue follow the steps below:

  • Open System Settings
  • Go to the Text Input section and select Edit under Input Sources
  • Add another language your comfortable with and then remove the one you had before or simply make the new one the topmost language
  • Wait a few minutes
  • Open the Emoji & Symbols with the 🌐 key or by pressing Cmd + Ctrl + Spacebar
  • Type the name of your emoji in English and see how it doesn't show
  • Type it again in the other language you've picked and there it is

As an example, if you pick Portuguese as the Input Source you'll have to type "Brasil" to get the "flag of Brazil" emoji.

The typing changes the "z" to an "s".

As a final note, though it's strange that this behavior has changed from macOS Sonoma without intent, it really seems odd that even though it's expected for the emoji to be searched for using the Input Source language the name of the emoji stays in English. You can check this by hovering the mouse over the emoji you selected.

Would love to see this fixed (or reverted if it was intentional) and I would also love to get some feedback if anyone managed to fix this.

Thanks in advance!
