You can update that Mac as far as Monterey, but no further.

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

If you update to Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey, 32-bit applications will stop working, and iTunes will go away in favor of separate applications (Music, TV, Podcasts, Books, and iPhone/iPad/iPod management in the Finder).

It is unfortunate that you have only 4 GB of RAM. The RAM on that machine is soldered in and non-expandable. I'm not sure how well Big Sur and Monterey will run even basic applications with 4 GB of RAM. and you say that you want to run an AI application.

There's another issue. This one is a show-stopper.

I tried to find "AI Chat" in the App Store. By any chance, are you referring to a program called AI Chat Chatbot? That program is not compatible with your MacBook Air, and will not be compatible with your MacBook Air, even if you upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey. Its description includes the following information:

  • "iPhone and iPad Apps"
  • "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS."
  • "Mac: Requires macOS 11.0 and a Mac with Apple M1 chip or later"

This is not a Mac application. It is an iPad one. Apple Silicon Macs have the ability to run apps that were designed for iPhones and iPads – if the app developer chooses to allow it. In this case, the app developer allows it – but has not verified that the app runs well on an Apple Silicon Mac (and might not have tested it on one at all).

Your Mac has an Intel chip (not an Apple Silicon one), and thus upgrading to macOS 11.0 (Big Sur) or later will not be enough to let you run this app. You will just get a different error message when you try.

What Mac you have – model, and hardware model year – will determine how far you can update.

Your tag line says that you have a 13" MacBook Air running macOS 10.12 (Sierra).

  • To update to Big Sur, you would need a MacBook Air released in Mid 2013 or later.
  • To update to Monterey, you would need a MacBook Air released in Early 2015 or later.
  • There is no possibility of updating to Ventura, Sonoma, or Sequoia. All of the MacBook Airs that are compatible with those versions of macOS are incompatible with Sierra. That tells us that you don't have one of them.

You should be able to find out your Mac's model year by selecting About This Mac from the Apple () menu.

I believe that even if your Mac turns out to be too old to run Big Sur, it would be able to run High Sierra, possibly even Catalina. But that would not let you run the AI Chat application.

I did another search.

There's another program called "Ai Chat : Assistant & Chatbot" that is for the Mac.

It requires macOS 12.0 (Monterey) or later – which makes me think that it is either a different program from the one that you mentioned, or that the application vendor just raised the minimum requirement to run it. But it is a Mac application and there is no mention of it requiring an Apple Silicon Mac.

The description says that it is "Built on ChatGPT & GPT 40" which means that the AI models will be running on some computer out on the Internet.

So maybe if you upgrade to Monterey, your Mac will be able to run it.

Note that this app has in-app purchases - they want you to pay for "subscriptions" by the week, month, or year.
