Rapid Battery Capacity Decline in iPhone

Hello,

I am experiencing a significant and rapid drop in the battery health of my iPhone. About 15 days ago, my battery capacity was at 99%, but now it has dropped to 96%. This means I have lost 3% of battery health in just two weeks. My iPhone currently has 167 charge cycles, and this sharp decline in capacity started happening after cycle 140.

Previously, the battery maintained 100% health for a long time, but this recent, fast drop is concerning. I mostly charge my iPhone frequently in small increments (a few percent at a time), and I always use the recommended charging practices, including charging overnight with Optimized Battery Charging enabled.

Is this normal, or is there an issue with my battery that needs attention? Could there be a software or hardware problem affecting my battery life? I would appreciate your guidance on how to address this issue.

Thank you for your help!

Another measure of Battery Health is cycles. You said your phone has been through 167 cycles. It would be normal to lose about 1% for every 25 cycles. Your battery is doing a LOT better than normal as it wouldn't be uncommon for a battery which has been through as many cycles are yours to have a 6% loss in Battery Health. Yet you're at 96%. So better than average and nothing to be concerned about.

One thing you can count on is the health of your battery will decline with every charge until the day comes that its health has dipped to 80% at which time you'll need to schedule a battery replacement at your Apple Store. Also, Battery Health decline is NOT linear. It can remain steady for a while, then drop a few points all at once as you've just seen.

Don't obsess over the normal degradation of the battery in your iPhone. You cannot stop it from declining. No one can.

You left out some important information. What model phone and how old is it?

Battery capacity declines, on average, about 1% a month. However, it's not linear. It may stay the same for a while then drop a couple of points. It also tends to decline more slowly the close it gets to 80%.

Another thing to consider is that, when you do a major update, the capacity percentage gets re-calibrated.

So, the bottom line is, if your phone is more than four months old, it's fine.

There are generally only two times that looking at the battery health gives you useful information. One, you should check it if the phone is behaving is unexpected ways, especially getting very hot. Two, check it about a month before the warranty ends. It if's at 80%, make arrangements to have it replaced while under warranty. Checking it frequently just tends to cause needless concern over something you can't control.

Heyy, I can understand how you feel. Let me explain it to you. I know it's frustrating when people say that its normal when you take care of the battery issues so keenly. I've been there and faced it. I have an Iphone 14 and first 6 months it was 100% battery capacity slowly next month it became 99% and 98% in the next month and within 10 months my battery capacity suddenly dropped to 87% with 1% battery capacity reducing every one week despite me following 20-80% charging rule.

It took me some months to figure out and currently 14 months are over and I have retained it at 85% and i no longer lose battery capacity every month or every week but once every 2 months (which I see is a great progress indeed)

So two things you need to follow in order to ensure that you don't lose battery capacity percentage every week.

1) Do not/ Never charge your phone with the phone case on

2) Do not use your phone when it's below 19%- Try to charge your phone the moment it drops down to 19%

3) Whenever you feel like your device is heating up suddenly...try to remove your phone case and stop using it for a few minutes

I followed these and it stopped my battery capacity reducing every one week to every 2 months. Hope this helps you as well

That's because loss of capacity is not linear and always slows as the battery gets older. What you're seeing is normal and has nothing to do with anything you've done.

Let's look at what Apple really says here:

* Batteries of iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions.*

I can't remember whether it is footnote 15 or 16 buried in the document, but after all the "disclaimers" are mentioned, the end result is that "ideal conditions" only exist in an ideal world. This world is a lot less than ideal.

Battery Health Issue on iPhone 15 Pro Max

Hello,

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max that I’ve been using for around 8 months now. I’ve been charging it carefully with a Baseus 65W charger, trying to avoid going below 15% or above 90% charge. I’ve also been keeping track of the battery health through the iPhone’s settings.

I noticed that my battery health started dropping more quickly than expected. Here are the details:

Max Capacity: Dropped from 96% (at 190 charge cycles) to 93% (at 209 charge cycles) within the span of a few weeks.

Charge Cycles: The battery cycle count has increased from 191 to 209 cycles in a short period.

Expected Battery Life: Apple promises that the battery will retain 80% of its original capacity after 1000 charge cycles, but I’m concerned about the rate at which the capacity is decreasing.

Is this a normal rate of degradation, or is it faster than expected for such a new phone? I’m aware that minor fluctuations in battery health can occur, but I wanted to get some opinions from others who might have experienced similar issues.

Thanks for your input!

Your iPhone battery is performing better than expected as we've been trying to tell you. Continuing to try to suggest it's not isn't going to get you anywhere. You can waste your time and have your closest Apple Store test the battery, but they are going to tell you the same things we are telling you.

Worrying needlessly over the natural and inevitable decline in Battery Health is a waste of your time. There is NOTHING wrong with the battery in your phone.
