Trade-in rejected by BlueDart and misrepresented to Apple Store

I purchased the iPhone 16 with a trade-in for my iPhone XR. The older phone is completely functional without any body damage or non-functioning parts except for a couple of discolored dots (0.5 mm in diameter at the most). As per the questionnaire, that I filled out while purchasing the phone on the Apple site, this qualified for the full trade-in value.

Today the iPhone 16 got delivered by BlueDart and at the time of delivery the delivery agent immediately saw the dots on the older iPhone and said this will be rejected. We were very confused since there was no mention of this being a disqualifying factor anywhere on the Apple site and these dots were not even visible unless you looked really close. We tried to reason with him but he refused and told us that we should try to sell it on Cashify (seemed like an unsolicited ad). He then refused to check anything else and said there is no point running diagnostics since the trade-in will be rejected anyway.

After a lot of back and forth, we ended up paying the trade-in value and received the new phone. Fast forward a few hours and I see now on the Apple order website that the trade-in value was modified because "Customer initiated cancellation" which is a bold-faced lie. I also found a few similar cases on Reddit. Has anyone else here faced this?

Apple Trade In - Apple

If Apple received your old iPhone, they would have been within their rights to offer a lower trade-in credit, or cancel the trade-in. What I don't see is anything saying that it is the delivery company's job to assess the condition of the old iPhone, and tell you what you will or won't receive for it.

You say that the delivery company refused to deliver the old phone to Apple. Who knows what they told Apple – or allowed Apple to assume, by default?

From Apple's standpoint, what happened may well have been a "Customer initiated cancellation". This wouldn't be a bald-faced lie at all – at least not on Apple's part.

You may want to take up the delivery agent's behavior with the delivery company …

The original post was not to say that Apple was lying in any way. More so that their delivery partners are pulling stuff like this. We have found similar experiences with this delivery partner (and Cashify in cahoots with them) on various online forums for Apple and other major brands like Samsung as well. So this is not something that has only happened to us. Given that they are the official delivery partners for Apple, who are also in charge of accepting the trade-in, the point of my post was to bring it to the attention of others so that people are aware that this sort of stuff is happening even with Apple's delivery partner in India.
