Why are alt metal bands misclassified on Apple Music?

Apple Music gets so many genres wrong especially in the alt metal/ nu metal scene. Why is korn, chevelle, soad, karnivool, deftones, and other alt/ nu metal bands placed as hard rock or rock bands? Convinced they don’t listen to the music their categorizing.

You are right about that! Apple Music is growing its catalog at around 5 million tracks per year, or around 100,000 per week, and Apple most definitely is not listening to all of them. The publisher is required to provide a genre from among the 400+ on the "approved" list ( see iTunes Package Music Specification Addendum: Music, Music Video, and Ringtone Genre Codes. ) and as Mac Jim D notes, that is what Apple uses.

For tracks that are local to your library, you can edit the genre as you wish.

The artist/publisher chooses the genre they want their music listed in. Many will provide multiple genres for maximum visibility. Apple is not categorizing the music, that is done by the artist/publisher when the track/album is submitted to Apple Music.

The same is true for apps you find in the App Store, the developer chooses the categories they want their app listed in.

I find it very hard to believe the publisher chose the "electronic" genre for Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker

Contact the Publisher/Rights Owner and they will be able to make any necessary change to their Artist page. This is the same page they use to upload their music, add lyrics, and artwork. In most cases the Rights Owner turns to a Publisher to add content to streaming services and it is not the Composer or Artist that is the one that is entering the information. There are many Publishers they have to choose from to perform this service.
