Preview app often opens larger jpeg files (10mb+) then immediately covers them with an all black layer.

Working on a MacBook Pro 14-inch, 2021 (Apple Silicon) and just upgraded to Sequoia 15.0.1. When I try to open most larger jpeg files (10mb+) with the Preview app the jpeg displays for a fraction of a second then is covered up by a solid black layer (see first image below). Yet all the photo info (e.g., EXIF & GPS) can still be displayed.

However, I can select and open multiple of the same large jpeg files with the Preview app and the thumbnails and full sized images display just fine (see second image below).

I pinpointed the exact cause of my problem. I was saving my photos on my iPhone as: Most Compatible, Photo Mode 24 MP and JPEG Max, then exporting them as: JPEG, Maximum, Most Compatible and Full Size. These photo Save and Export settings create the problem with the black layer over the exported photo.

I now save photos on my iPhone as: High Efficiency, Photo Mode 24 MP and HEIF Max. Then use the same Export settings as just described. This makes the Saved photo files on my iPhone smaller (HEIF), yet still get great Export quality (JPEG) and no black layer over the exported photo.

Thanks

jpeg from where...(?)

All jpegs or this is a one off isolated event...(?)

I would manually try changing the .jpeg to .jpg —a simple file name change and compare your results

All the jpegs are exports of photos taken with my iPhone 15 Pro saved in Apple Photos. They are stored in Apple Photos as jpegs. The Apple Photos export settings are:

File Type: JPEG

JPEG Quality: Maximum

Color Profile: Most Compatible

Size: Full Size

Opening the exports in the Apple Preview app blacks out about 90% of those files exported that are larger than 10mb. The same files open fine in all other photo related apps that I tested (e.g., Photoshop, Luminar Neo, PhotoMill, Topaz Gigapixel, Safari, Chrome and Adobe Acrobat).

I tried changing the file extension from .jpeg to .jpg with the same results in the Apple Preview app. I have also tried the Apple Preview app in Safe Mode with the same results.

Thanks for your reply.
