What to do if I can’t log into my iCloud for Find My iPhone?

How do I use find my iphone if I can't log into my icloud? The two step authentification wont allow me to log in without sending a verification code to my lost phone.

(I never opted for the two step auth. but I guess it's been more than two weeks since Apple added it to my account, so I can't remove it).

For context: my phone was stolen a week ago and luckily i got it back but the find my phone app was completely useless because Apple wouldn't log me into my account. I want to figure out how to find my phone if something happens in the future. I do have an iPad that I never use, the only way it seems I can find my missing phone is if I keep that with me always just in case or pay for a second phone line that I will never use.

Two factor authentication can only be enabled two ways. First is by the Apple ID owner through Settings. Second a brand new Apple ID has it automatically enabled which has been standard for considerable amount of time now.

As for tracking and marking a phone missing or lost, it does not require two factor authentication. Apple has a support article that gives you step-by-step instructions and options. Find your lost iPhone or iPad - Apple Support :

Use Find Devices on iCloud.com/find

When you sign in to iCloud.com/find, you don't need to enter a verification code — so you can use Find Devices even if your trusted device is lost. If you're asked to enter a verification code, select the Find Devices button instead. On iCloud.com/find, you can also mark your device as lost.
