Importing the postal code automatically in contacts app

I manage to import an csv file in Contacts, with 1 exception for the initial mapping: postal code.

Of course, on the screen after reading of the external file, Apple request you to check the mapping. After the correction the result is fine.

I would like to have the mapping correct by default.

I tried several values, like:

  • postalcode;
  • postal code;
  • postal code (home).

All values result in “do not import”.

Some fields are location specific (e.g. a 'postal code' in the UK would be known as a zip code in the US), and I don't know if it expects the US or some localized version of field names.

The best way to check would be to find an existing contact (anyone would do) and copy it.

Then paste that into a spreadsheet or text editor - the contact is copied as CSV, so you can see exactly what columns headers Contacts is using, and it should be simple to re-apply that to your import file.

You can also use this to determine how to enter multiple fields that can have multiple entries such as addresses (home vs. work), phone numbers (cell, home, office, etc.) and email addresses.
