I am not receiving push notifications on my iPhone after iOS 18 update

After the iOS 18 update I no longer receive push notifications on my Lock Screen. I have to open the apps to see that I receive a message hours ago and never received the notification. iPhone 13 Pro

The only thing that worked for me was resetting all settings. Settings app > “General” > “Transfer or reset iphone” > “Reset” > choose “Reset all settings” from the popup menu.

It’s annoying that it requires a blanket fix like that, but it’s way less frustrating than the notification problems. The most intense implications of resetting your settings, in my experience, was that every app acts somewhat like a newly installed app when you open it again after resetting – it’ll keep your “in app” settings (so any settings you’ve managed from the app itself isn’t reset) and data (it doesn’t wipe your app clean), but any settings in the literal iPhone Settings app will be set back to default values. This means you have to allow camera and mic access, access to photo library, access to your location data, etc. I found it a nice way to kind of overhaul my privacy settings everywhere, silver lining.

please note that it will also delete your saved Wifi passwords, unless you have them saved in the passwords app like your network is a website (the passwords app is safe from the reset).

Here are a few steps to fix the push notifications issue on your iPhone 13 Pro after the iOS 18 update:

1. Check Notification Settings:

• Go to Settings > Notifications.

• Select the affected apps and ensure that Allow Notifications is enabled, and check that Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are selected.

2. Check Focus Mode:

• Ensure that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not enabled. Go to Settings > Focus and make sure no focus mode is blocking notifications.

3. Turn Off Low Power Mode:

• Go to Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode, as it may prevent push notifications.

4. Check Background App Refresh:

• Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and make sure it’s enabled for the affected apps.

5. Reboot Your iPhone:

• Restart your phone by pressing and holding the power button, then sliding to power off. Turn it back on after a few seconds.

6. Check for App Updates:

• Go to the App Store and update the affected apps in case they need updates for iOS 18 compatibility.

7. Reset All Settings:

• Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won’t delete your data, but it will reset system settings like Wi-Fi passwords and notifications.

If none of these work, it might be worth waiting for a future iOS 18 patch or contacting Apple Support.

SOLVED!!

It’s a push notification issue with iOS18. It effects non Apple apps only. Don’t waste your time calling Apple because they will refer you to the app creator. To fix it you have to go to settings-general-iPhone storage and then delete and redownload whichever apps you’re not getting notifications for. You basically have to redo the permission that pops up when you first download an app that asks for permission to send you notifications.

#7, reset all settings, fixed the notification issues. But, get use to setting up your phone again for the next week or so. You’ll have to login to your all your WiFi-s with your password again, set up signing in with your password and face recognition with all your apps; tailor all your display, font, focus, sound & haptics settings again; almost like a brand new phone, except your apps and data are there. Pretty annoying.

I will probably refrain from any updates indefinitely. I already use F2A with hard passkeys, and a VPN, so the security argument for conducting updates is watered down enough for my risk tolerance. With the “leave no child behind” generation securely in today’s workforce, these half-assed updates they’re putting out aren’t worth the trouble.

I’ll be setting up a secure googless android to replace the iPhone soon enough. Abstaining from any new Apple products from here on out will be my weaning off Apple period. This sort of thing has happened too often.

so it seems like the “uninstall and reinstall the faulty app” is a good strategy for most apps, but you cannot uninstall the built-in Messages app. It also seems like it’s not about the iPhone not knowing it got a new message, but some kind of issue with push notifications not getting triggered by a new message, so I created a shortcut/automation that mimics a new message notification:

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/3fb758687ed4430688d24baf3abe82d3

instructions for setup are directly in the shortcut. All you gotta do is save it to your shortcuts, then create an automation that triggers every time you receive a message containing a space (or any other text of your choosing, or from specific contacts — this is up to you).

in the Automations tab, tap “+” once you’ve saved the shortcut, scroll to Messages, select “run immediately”, enter a space (or other text) in the “Message Contains” field and leave the “Sender” field blank. Or you can leave the “Message Contains” field blank and instead select specific contacts you want to see notifications from in the “Sender” field. Or you could enter both specific text and specific contacts, but you cannot leave both blanks unfortunately.

Then, in the screen that appears, you’ll see “Receive message as input”. Below that, search for the “Run Shortcut” action, and replace the “Shortcut” field with the “Messages” shortcut i linked above.

now when you receive a message, your phone will check to see what app you’re on or whether your phone is locked. If it’s locked or if you’re outside of Messages, you’ll get a notification (that gets “shown” on your lockscreen and stays as usual) and a pop-up menu at the top of your screen with the sender and content of the message. Hit the • • • in the pop-up menu to open the Messages app or tap elsewhere on your screen to make the menu disappear.

note: this isn’t a perfect solution but it’s very close to what notifications actually do; i’ve been testing it for a few days and it works decently well. i’m not a coder tho so if anyone has tips to improve the shortcut/automation, i’ll be happy to adjust it!

A little update:

I reinstalled all the apps that were missing notifications, and they worked on iOS 18.1.

When iOS 18.2 was released, I waited about two weeks before updating, keeping all the apps on my phone up to date in the meantime. After finally updating to 18.2, the notifications were not broken.

My guess is that Apple made some changes in iOS 18.2, and the apps needed to update accordingly to continue delivering notifications.

Sharing my case: had my phone set to Italian language, with English as secondary language. After upgrading to iOS 18 i noticed I didn't receive push notifications from some Apps (in particular from QNAP QManager to manage a NAS) while iOS Mail, GMail and others worked normally. Tried activating Focus mode on/off, reset network settings, forcing reboot with no results. Solved after setting iPhone language to English, setting Focus/Do Not Diturb mode on then off (notification badges appears on app icons), still working (so far) after setting language back to Italian. Hope it can help.

Solved, at least for the Mail app! After updating to IOS 18.3.1 on my iPhone 12 and making sure lock screen notifications were turned on, new mail made a sound, but there was no banner on the lock screen, even after trying all suggestions I found online. I discovered the fix hidden deep in the notification settings for the Mail app. Besides making sure lock screen notifications are turned on, go to Customize Notifications (bottom of Mail Notifications page), and at the bottom of the Customize Notifications page, select Primary Inbox and make sure that Alerts is turned on. If it isn't, you get only audible alerts on the lock screen. Now the banner pops up along with the audible alert.

This issue has been bugging me for months, and I have tried many of the suggestions here. Specifically, I am not receiving notifications when the phone screen is off. I do receive notifications on the lock screen when the screen is not off. This includes notifications from native apps like Message and 3rd party apps like Ring.

Here is what I have learned. For reference, I am running iOS18.4.1 on an iPhone 16 (256GB). I also have a Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) watch running watchOS 8.8.1.

  1. Unpairing the Apple Watch from the phone corrects the issue. Notifications from Message and Ring appear on the locked, turned off screen as expected.
  2. Re-pairing the Apple Watch and completing the set up of the watch causes the problem to come back. No notifications on the locked, off screen.
  3. Unpairing the Apple Watch for a 2nd time corrects the issue. Notifications from Message and Ring appear on the locked, turned off screen as expected.
  4. Re-pairing the Apple Watch (this time without setting up the Wallet on the phone just for kicks) causes the problem to come back. No notifications on the locked, off screen.
  5. Unpairing watch for the 3rd time corrects the issue. Notifications from Message and Ring appear on the locked, turned off screen as expected.

TL:DR - For my set up, the issue seems to be related to the pairing of my Apple Watch to my phone. Any suggestions for further troubleshooting are greatly appreciated (ahem...Apple Support).

Finally!!!  A possible solution for most of you.

The notifications for our "Reminders", "Calendar" and others, were not working.

Yes, it’s likely a glitch in IOS 18.

I went through most all of the suggestions on the previous 7 pages and none of them worked.

I decided to go to our Apple store and the tech found and fixed this in 5 minutes!

Here is what he found:

He switched our “Notifications” from a Yahoo account to the iCloud account. Here is how to do it.

Go to "Settings" - The main screen where your name is.

Select "iCloud".

Select "See All" next to the words "Saved to iCloud".

Scroll down to (my example) "Reminders" and switch it ON.

Turn "ON" all the Apps you want notifications from.

You're NOT Done yet!

Go back to the main Settings screen again.

Scroll all the way down to "Apps" and select it.

In "Apps" select the App you want working.  Example: "Reminders".

In "Reminders", select "Reminders Accounts".

Select "iCloud" to have "Reminders" work from your ICloud account.

Do this for all the Apps you want Notifications from.

After this, all our appointments in "Calendar" were still were there.

It worked for us, hope it does for you too.

I noticed after updating to 18.1 that I too wasn't receiving push notifications and tried all the remedies that have been suggested and nothing fixed it. In the end I actually erased my phone and set up as new, didn't use a back up to set it up and although its been long and tedious re-installing all my apps, I have noticed that push notifications have begun working again.

However, there are some apps where the notifications just aren't working, and the ones that are seem to have quite a delay before receiving them.

It's actually not just push notifications I'm noticing this on, when you have to send a code to your phone via text to authenticate yourself for different sites etc, I'm noticing quite a delay in receiving those texts as well.

Very frustrating and I hope it's fixed in 18.2 as well as the touch screen responsiveness. I'm still having issues with that bug.

Yes, bang on. Resetting will cause you to set up wifi passwords, Face ID and a whole load of other stuff again - and there’s no guarantee that it’ll work. I found that deleting and re-installing the apps in question does work - all of these are now posting notifications again for me. I know it’s a pain but it’s the lesser of the two evils when comparing with a reset.
