numbers formula

I am obviously relatively new to spreadsheets in general and am trying to have numbers total a couple of cells if another cell has a text not equal to "Y" - I tried doing it like this but it doesn't seem to work right. SUMIF(Payment received ≠"Y",Invoice amount −'Partial Payment ') also would like it to recognize a blank cell as containing a 0 in the number part of the calculation if possible
