In System Preferences, when you select the Desktop picture, you should get a drop-down that gives you options like "Fit", "Fill", "Stretch" and "Center" to adjust the picture. However, the reality of it is, if the picture you selected doesn't have the same aspect ratio as your display, something is getting cropped to fit to the screen - unless you pick the "Stretch" option, in which case something is getting distorted.
