How can I fix jumping space bar issue with keyboard on my iPad?

When I use my iPad with a keyboard, the space bar jumps all around the screen like I'm using the tab button on a website, even when on a word document. Also I cannot continue to write a document by pressing the space bar. I have to press a letter before the space bar will work. The keyboard will randomly "cut out" when I'm typing quickly and the onscreen keyboard pops on and off then back to the keyboard without my typed content.
