Setting new watch face on Apple Watch

Purchased a new Iphone 16. I then tried to pair it with my watch and it appeared to be successful. But then,

from the Apple Watch app, I created a new watch face and customized, but when i choose "Set as Current Watch Face", the watch does not recognize or update my watch.
