Macbook Air M3

hello ,

i have one macbook air m3   with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports type usb c (its also usb 4 ) , two monitors , both of them supports hdmi and display port(not mini )

and , i have bought one belkin product  < https://www.belkin.com/p/pro-thunderbolt-4-dock/INC006ttSGY.html  >

i have connect, from my first macbook's port , to the belkin dock, with a thunderbolt cable, and in the dock i have connect 2 monitors via hdmi , so with this use the monitors work but only in mirror mode with the macbook lid closed ( in mac's settings shows only the one external monitor) , if i open the lid the 2 monitors works as mirror again and the macbook's screen as extended desktop. ( in mac's settings shows only the one external monitor and the mac's screen )

after purchace of belkin dock , and the problem i mentioned above , i saw this Use dual monitors with your MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M3 chip - Apple Support .

if i follow apple's instruction and connect directly the monitors to macbook air, then i dont have any ports free to use another peripheral devices such as usb flash drives, external ssd e.t.c.

so here is my question:

if i leave the dock connected with macbook (with the thunderbolt cable ) , and up to the dock leave the one monitor with hdmi , after connect the second monitor directly (with usb c to hdmi female adapter OR usb c to Display female adapter ) to the macbook , can the macbook work with the two monitors ( with macbook lid closed ) as extended desktop ( not mirror ) ?

my needs is to work with two external monitors , the first monitor be tha main desktop , and the second monitor as extended

Please refer to the description for the Belkin dock.

Scroll down to the table with the title "Dual Extended Displays: Mac". According to this table, you cannot use both of the HDMI ports on the dock with a Mac. However, you might be able to get things to work if you

  • Leave the dock's HDMI 1 port open.
  • Plug one display into the dock's HDMI 2 port.
  • Plug the other display in the dock's Thunderbolt daisy-chaining port with the aid of a USB-C (DP) to DisplayPort or USB-C (DP) to HDMI adapter.

In any event, even if you only plug one display into the dock – and plug the other directly into the Mac after closing the lid – it looks like you should avoid using the HDMI 1 port on the dock.

Hey, thanks for your answer . What is the <usb c (DP) to HDMI adapter? Because DP i think means display port ?

I probably should have left off the "(DP)" – which stands for DisplayPort Alt Mode. Most vendors will refer to their products as USB-C to HDMI adapters or adapter cables, with the DisplayPort part being unspoken, but implied.

Your Mac's native USB-C video output is in DisplayPort Alt Mode form or Thunderbolt Alt Mode form. There was an effort to define a HDMI Alt Mode, but it was so far behind the curve that nobody uses it. Everyone's adapters or adapter cables take DisplayPort Alt Mode input and convert it into HDMI output.
