Charging phone and not transferring data

I’m assuming you are charging with your computer; if you charge with a wall power source no data can be transferred.

There is a checkbox on the Summary screen in iTunes (PCs and older Macs) or in Finder (newer Macs) “Automatically sync this phone when connected”. Just uncheck this box.
