CleanMyMac causes FCP X to crash

I have SetApp, and CleanMyMac. After CleanMyMac had an major update, I’ve experienced FCP X crashing on startup. I had to uninstall CleanMyMac and reinstall FCP X. Has anyone experienced something similar. I have the latest version of FCP X and macOS 15.0.1

Of course!

So many of us who have been around for (more time than we care to admit) know this fully well.

Cleanmymac is utter garbage, I consider it malware, and I am not alone.

The very notion that your mac needs a third party app to "clean" or "optimize it" is but a scam to separate wary users from their money. And to make matters worse, it does not just not help, it actually can thrash your system.

CleanMyMac causes problems with everything including your system. It is the worst piece of software you could put on your computer and should be removed with the provided uninstaller. Even then you may find that it will not want to remove itself entirely and will need additional assistance to get ride of it. We are here to help with any follow up.

SetApp is just a collection of low quality apps, where you will also find many that will give you problems. Personally, I would consider the interaction with those apps on your computer as suspicious. Most will install files that launch on startup and continue to run on your computer including SetApp processes in your Launch folders.

In addition to CleanMyMac being the worst piece of software you could install on your Mac, SetApp is filled with applications that also install launch items similar to Malware. It is likely when you uninstalled CleanMyMac that all of its files have not been removed. It likes to forever live on your computer.

I suggest posting the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information, but will identify the launch items that remain on your computer.

Also, a word about SetApp.

It seems to an aggregator site/app to distribute mac applications.

I often read many posts on sites like medium that are badly disguised adverts for SetApp, purporting to show how great several applications "that I first install on all my macs" are. And of course they are all distributed via SetApp.

It does not pass the smell test for me.

What about cache? Will a Mac clear cache that accumulates on the machine? That was the main reason I started using CleanMyMac.

In addition to the Kurt's wise observation: in the event that some caches grow beyond reasonable size, or there is any reason to suspect they may have some form of corruption,

simply starting your Mac in Safe Mode tests and cleans up, if needed.

You can also (although, as Kurt noted, problably you don't need and shouldn't) delete some of them manually.

They're in ~/Library/Caches.

There may be caches from apps that you no longer use or have; but I'd just leave them be unless they baloon to a huge size. At present, this whole folder on my mac is less than 1GB, not really worth messing with.

Exactly the same for me! I was in a hurry to do this stupid thing with the cleanmymac5 update on both macs that I had a 2-computer subscription to. Now I can't open any FINAL CUT PROGRAM. I reinstalled them and on startup they give me the report page. I feel like I've taken a big hit and on top of that I have video projects going on. I deleted everything related to CLEANMYMAC and reinstalled them again. I hope it works this time.

Did you solve it? I have same problem and have a deadline tomorrow...

Add-on cleaner apps, add-on security apps, add-on VPN apps, yes, these sorts of apps can and variously do cause corruptions and crashes, or can be used for metadata or other data collection.

In the arena of Mac apps, if it's heavily advertised and you didn't specifically go looking for it, you probably don't want to install it.

Etrecheck data can show the hardware and software configuration. As was requested above, please post that.

Cleanup after some of these cases can involve re-installing macOS, and restoring file data and settings and such without restoring existing apps.

To confirm everything is deleted, I can recommend using the free EtreCheck app, which will show you if there is any lingering files in the Launch folders as well as the Extensions folder. You can either review the report yourself or post it here using the Additional Text option where there are many users who know exactly what to look for. EtreCheck was developed by a fellow user here and is commonly used to see what is being run on startup.

I have setapp, also Cleanmymac and I just realized that every time I do a clean for "space" Final Cut Pro doesn't open, the icon only jumps, and I have to re-install FCPX, I saw a 2017 post of people talking about this problem also, so bye bye cleanmymac, now I had problems to edit and I'm thinking of make a full restart of the Macbook to make it like new and don't install cleanmymac again

Another person (Alejandrortz) joined the thread, asking a similar question, so replies here might get confusing.

Add-on cleaners and add-on security apps can potentially require reinstallation of macOS and apps to resolve latent data corruptions.

I deleted everything related to that Clean MyMac and reinstalled FIN_CUT. With these things, they often slow me down when installing, and I think there are some remnants of that Clean MyMac, which, I think, is now intentionally creating problems for me to return to their services. To top it off, the last message from them sounded like this: "Bye-bye, space wasters 👋 " ... a bit jokingly. That's it, I got burned this time!

The add-on cleaning and add-on security apps and add-on VPN apps have had a history of causing issues and noise and for ill-defined user benefits, yes.

Removal can be problematic, both with buts that don’t get removed, and with any latent corruptions left around.

If you want us to look at this Mac, please download (free) and run EtreCheck, and share the generated report to the clipboard. Then open a new reply here, and press the Additional Text button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box big enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here, and paste and post that report here.
