Want to delete old Apple account so I can change email on current one

Hello,

My current apple id account is associated with my secondary email which I don't check as often so I wanted to change my email to my main email which I use for literally everything. I've realised there is already an apple id account on that email which i must've made when i was a kid, that account is associated with a very very old phone number which i do not remember at all.

Speaking with an agent they told me there was no other way to recover my account than to remember my 10+ year old phone number, why?? I have that email right here, i use it every single day, it's connected to all my other services, why can i not just get a link sent to it? It literally has the same first name and last name in it.

I fully understand and appreciate the security concerns from Apple but there has to be another way to confirm my identity, I just want my apple ID to be on the same email that i use for everything else because it's more practical. I'm prepared to provide any other document to prove that email and account is mine, if you want bank statements, I can even come into an Apple store and open that email account if front of them if they want. But there has to be some system to get my account back?

I just want to delete it so I can change the email on my current account.

From: How to delete your Apple Account - Apple Support

“Can I use the primary email address for my deleted Apple Account to create a new Apple Account or with another existing Apple Account?

No, once your Apple Account is deleted, you can’t use the email address that you used with it to create a new Apple Account for as long as Apple retains the one-way hash of the email address. For third-party (non-Apple) domain accounts, the one-way hash is deleted after six years. For other accounts, this is retained according to Apple's retention policy, which is reviewed regularly. In addition, you can’t use that email address with another existing Apple Account except as a rescue email. Also, if your primary Apple Account email address is with a Custom Email Domain, it can never be reused to create an Apple Account after your Apple Account is deleted, even if the domain ownership changes.”

The other way is to get access to the account and then to park it with yet another email address until you can use the one that was just on it for the one with which you wish to use it.

Change your Apple Account primary email address - Apple Support

- If you remove an email address from your Apple Account, it can’t be associated with another Apple Account for 30 days for security reasons.

If you can’t change your Apple Account primary email address

- If you try to change your Apple Account to an @icloud.com email address that was created within the last 30 days, you will be asked to try again later.

- If you see a message that the email address you want to use isn’t available or is already in use, check that you or a family member aren’t already using that email address with a different Apple Account. If a family member is using that email address, remove it from their account, then try to use it.

Any hacker who has compromised an email account could say they have somebody's email address right in front of them and can log into it. Apple has its structured way of identifying account owners and you'll have to meet their security requirements. Given that deleting the account (which you can't do anyway unless you can get into it) might then entail a 6 year old wait, maybe it is best to just move on?
