Help with Mysterious iCloud Email on My Account and Apple ID Management

Hello,

I recently bought an iPhone and tried logging in with my existing Apple account, which I created a long time ago. When I checked the "Sign-In and Security" section, I noticed that my account had a primary email ID and also an unfamiliar iCloud email address (xxxxx@icloud.com). I have no idea how that iCloud email got linked to my account, as I never created it.

I contacted Apple Support about this, and they mentioned that Apple cannot delete the iCloud email. This has made me feel like my account might be compromised.

Additionally, I asked Apple Support if they could remove my primary Apple ID (which is a Gmail address) so that I can create a new Apple account with the same Gmail address.

Can someone kindly help me resolve this issue? I'm concerned about the security of my account and don't want any unknown Apple ID associated with it.

Thank you for your help!

iPhone 15, iOS 18

I would suggest you either deal with the issue of the old account and forget about creating a new one (why would you want to do that?), or create a new one and don't worry about the old one. Dealing with both is unnecessary work.

Being able to use that old account's email address is going to be a bit of work. If you simply delete the account, it will place that address in hold mode for several years.

From: How to delete your Apple Account - Apple Support

“Can I use the primary email address for my deleted Apple Account to create a new Apple Account or with another existing Apple Account?

No, once your Apple Account is deleted, you can’t use the email address that you used with it to create a new Apple Account for as long as Apple retains the one-way hash of the email address. For third-party (non-Apple) domain accounts, the one-way hash is deleted after six years. For other accounts, this is retained according to Apple's retention policy, which is reviewed regularly. In addition, you can’t use that email address with another existing Apple Account except as a rescue email. Also, if your primary Apple Account email address is with a Custom Email Domain, it can never be reused to create an Apple Account after your Apple Account is deleted, even if the domain ownership changes.”

To use it again, you would have to swap out the address with yet another one, then wait 30 days. Read Change your Apple Account primary email address - Apple Support

- If you remove an email address from your Apple Account, it can’t be associated with another Apple Account for 30 days for security reasons.

If you can’t change your Apple Account primary email address

- If you try to change your Apple Account to an @icloud.com email address that was created within the last 30 days, you will be asked to try again later.

- If you see a message that the email address you want to use isn’t available or is already in use, check that you or a family member aren’t already using that email address with a different Apple Account. If a family member is using that email address, remove it from their account, then try to use it.
