The issue of app crashing is solved when AVG is uninstalled from my mac. Can you recommend any free antivirus that will work with my mac as web protection, scanning?

None. Zero. They are all worthless.
There are not, and has never been an actual virus in OS X / macOS. The only viruses they would ever detect would be Windows viruses acquired as an email attachment. And since they can't run on a Mac, it doesn't matter how many you may get.

No such product is required for your Mac, free or otherwise.
There is no anti-virus that will work with macOS, free or otherwise.
Some may actually run, but eventually will cause some problem.
There is also nothing for them to find.
