iphone 16 pro max always on display not working

Always on display is on in settings but occasionally the screen looks black as if it’s not on? This isn’t on sleep mode etc - I understand the screen will not be dimly lit when sleep mode on. Have seen a few threads of this online making me think it’s more of a software niggle rather than the actual device. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

How can I fix black screen issues on iPhone 15? My 15 has black screen most mornings while it’s charging and sometimes take a few minutes to work. It called 911 one morning while I was trying to get the screen to come on. Any solutions? [Re-Titled by Moderator]
