When I search a location in Safari and then click on directions it no longer opens up maps. It instead forces me to open Google maps. I’ve deleted google maps and still get this:

Change your Search Engine to something other than Google.
I don't understand it either. If I change Safari's Search Engine to DDG I get the Apple Maps image which is what I want. If I change the Search Engine to Google I get harassed to sign into "my" Google Account despite the fact I have no such thing. Similar results happen if I choose Bing or whatever other options there are. But I did all that to confirm my answer was still correct. Then I changed it back to DDG and everything is as it should be.
As I rule I permit no Google apps to installed on my devices, so if you installed something of that nature it may be a factor.
If you started another thread I can't find it. There was an identical question some time ago. I'll attempt to find it.
Understandable. I know you deleted the Google Maps app, so why is it saying "Open app"?
I am tempted to ask if you're 100% certain you deleted the Google Maps app but I did not want to imply doubt on my part. What happens when you click that blue button?

Tried that. Doesn’t work. Hubby and I have settings exactly the same. Deleted apps. Reset settings. This seems to be a problem for people without a know solution I’ve seen on various threads. Goes back a while. Started new thread in hopes someone figured out problem.

Another obliquely related one: Safari-Google Maps-Apple Maps - Apple Community, in which IdrisSeabright suggested altering some Google setting... but I understand you deleted Google Maps and aren't using any Google products including Search.
when you delete Google snd google maps, it still shows google and asks you to download it. Frustrating.
