Using Safari version 18.0.1 getting generic error

Hi, I receive an email from Costco, it has hyper links to quickly go to their different sites like: What's new or Hot Buy etc. When I click on those links, the computer opens a new tab and the top says: https://www.costco.ca/GenericError and gives me the message below

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.0

The context of that message implies that the website is using an unacceptably large number of redirects. A "redirect" in this context means a link containing a link that loads another link etc. The overall effect will be a website that will either consume excessive bandwidth and / or will take an excessive amount of time to load.


That's a problem only the website developer can fix.

This led me to question just how many redirects is considered too many. The answer is that different browsers impose different limits. The generally accepted answer is that ten redirects are ok, but twenty is definitely too many. The reason for the limit goes beyond page loading efficiency. It is one of several defenses against various means of implementing tracking.


There are several ways of accomplishing a redirect; this WebKit reference describes one such defense:
