Spurious Double Clicks on Sequoia

I'd been having pretty serious problems under Sonoma, so I decided to roll the dice as an early adopter of Sequoia, risking the postgrade to 15.0.1. Sadly, I'm already regretting it. In particular, I'm having a rather serious problem with single clicks being frequently spuriously turned into double clicks.

I'm not able to reproduce the double click at will. It seems to happen only when I'm switching to a window after some time has passed. On the other hand, it's happening very frequently ... to the point where I'm really going to go crazy if I don't do something.

I've tried changing the double-click speed in the system settings. This hasn't had any effect.

I don't believe it's a hardware problem. First, I didn't have the problem under Sonoma. Second, it doesn't happen unless I'm switching windows after a delay.

  1. Is there an easy way to backgrade from macOS Sequoia to macOS Sonoma?
  2. Is there any standard way of blocking the operating system of allowing all double clicks? I can live without double clicks for a few months until Apple solves this problem (assuming they will solve it).
  3. Are there any third-party utilities that can intercept double click events (and delete them, or turn them into single clicks or something else)?

PS:

Another aspect of this problem ... which is particularly disruptive. Many applications seem to respond to double click by resizing their windows in ways I'm not familiar with. I'm guessing this has something to do with Apple's newest attempt to implement window tiling features. Apple seems to have been struggling unsuccessfully to implement decent window manager features for a very long time, so it might make sense that the double click problem is related to an ineptly implemented tiling feature.

In practice, this means that when a window title bar is clicked, the window resizes in a way that requires me to manually resize the window again to get the old size back. (A second double click doesn't accomplish this.) Unfortunately, as near as I can tell, none of the new tiling functionality is very useful, and macOS seems to still be quite far behind Windows and Linux in this area. In any case, with the double click problem on top of this, macOS is more or less a basket case ... it would be really nice if I could reinstall a previous version of macOS, if that's possible.

I have the same problem. Double clicking no longer works after Sequoia update to rename a folder in Finder. Increasing the double-click speed has no effect. I have to right click to rename a folder in Finder. And it is only a problem in Finder and not other software. It is the same on my mac desktop (Apple Studio M1 Max ) and my Macbook Pro (M1 Max.) I upgraded last week, but this only started happening yesterday. I have closed down both and reopened and the problem still exists.

DISREGARD - FIGURED IT OUT - Talking about double clicks, I have always double clicked to open folders/files in Finder but now it is not working in Sequoia. Did something change with this upgrade? I now have to right click to open folders/files in Finder. I also don't like how it keeps opening tabs. How do I turn that off?

It is very annoying the double click is not working in Sequoia. I have not find a solution apart from right click and open document.

The other thing I did when previewing a doc ( without pressing space bar - meaning using another hand to manage controls) was to set up trackpad to "Tap three fingers for look up & data detectors."

Double-click works fine in Sequoia.

Your issue appears to be different. The OP wanted double-click to rename, which was never a thing.

You seem to want double-click to open - that IS a thing, and it works.

Perhaps your problem is that you have the double-click speed set too high, and your double-clicking is registering as two separate clicks.

Go to System Settings->Accessibility->Pointer Control and adjust the slider, moving it a bit to the left until you're comfortable.

Maybe I read too quiclky, but everybody is focused on your folder rename while the issue is simply double-clicking. Due to overuse of the mouse killing my arm, I have programmed every mouse and foot pedal with the double clic function and every mouse has stopped working correctly since the move to Sequoia. This is my main concern. When this is fixed, I guess all other functionalities will come back to some normal. Yes, I tried changing the clicking mouse speed.

It seems that your issue is different from OP's.

I remember some time ago, there were also problems with using a foot pedal (I can't remember the OS version). It is possible that you are facing a regression to an old bug.

Since not many users use this sort of input device, I think it might help if you submit a bug report to Apple using the feedback page:

This is for all and thanks for all the responses. I ejected my external drives and all is back to normal. I can rename a folder in Finder for files on my external drive with a double click. The bad news is it still does not work on my laptop. The only difference in my laptop and my desktop is that I have external drives connected to it. For folders on my desktop and laptop, it works if I click once and move the pointer up.
