Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these articles:  Pubic VPN's are anything but public and Security Risks: The Dangers of Using Free VPNs (eccu.edu).

I suggest not using a public VPN. If you need a VPN to create a secure point-to-point tunnel between you and your workplace/school/etc. network, contact the network admin and get their suggestion as to which VPN client to use to connect to their network.

Speak to your employers, if you are traveling for them it is their responsibility to supply you with the tools you need. However, as we have suggested using a VPN tunnel is not recommended in 99% of the cases! You need to read up on Apple security and you should find that Apple takes your data's security very very seriously!
