I want to take a screenshot of an item that is larger (in height) than the MB Air screen. Easy to do if connected to an external monitor. Is there anyway to get the portion that is about 2-3 inches below what shows on the screen?

Try this:
Press Shift-Command-4, then press the Space bar. Move the camera pointer over the window to highlight it, then click.
That may work; at least it did when I just tested it with a window that was partially off the bottom of the screen.

Have you set the display to the highest available resolution (System Settings > Displays)?
I tried, but had no luck. It just won't copy more than what is on the screen. That said, I really appreciate you trying for me.
What app are you using that you need to get information past the viewable area?
Take a screenshot beyond the height of the MB Air screen?
