Using the Apple lightning-to-USB C adapter to connect a lightning lavaliere mic to an iPhone 16 Pro

I have a Pixel Lavalier Microphone with a lightning connector. It works perfectly with my iPhone 11 Pro (just plug it in and record a video, and the iPhone uses the audio from the lavalier mic instead of the built-in mic). I also have the Apple USB-C to Lightning Adapter, but when I plug the adapter into the lavalier mic and then plug the adapter into my iPhone 16 Pro and record a video, the iPhone still uses the built-in mic from the iPhone for audio. The product page overview says that the adapter supports "charging, data, and audio", so I really do not know why this is not working.

Is there something I'm missing here? I was hoping not to have to buy a new lavalier mic with USB C.

Adapters tend to be finicky. It's been my observation that a not insignificant number of people report issues when something major changes, either the phone or iOS. They ought to work but.....

Have you tried the setup on a different model phone? Have you tried a different adapter?

I've tried the same thin9 with my iPad mini 6 that has USB C and not lightning, but it didn't work there either. If I had another adapter I'd try it, but the one I have is the one from Apple, so I don't really think it's a bad adapter.

It doesn't seem to matter who makes the adapter, though I don't know why they seem to fail so frequently. It could be one reason or many.

What version of iPadOS is the mini running?

You could try the basics like restarting, force restarting, restoring from a back up, restoring to factory settings and see if it makes a difference.

My suspicion is that it's some combination of the version of iOS and the adapter but I don't really know. If it were me and the cost was within my budget, I'd replace it with a USB-C mic. The more links you put in a chain, the more chances for a weak one. Are you old enough to remember troubleshooting SCSI chains?

I'm fairly certain the adapter is fine, since I can use it for other things. I'm thinking that maybe it doesn't support recording audio, but does support playing audio, but I can't find tech specs of the adapter that are that specific.

If it doesn't work for one thing that it's supposed to work for, even if it works properly in all other ways, means it might be the problem. If, for example everything on your iPhone worked correctly except for the port, the problem would still be the port, not what you plugged into it.

I'm old, but not quite old enough to have any experience with SCSI chains :)

Between SCSI chains and extension conflicts, one learned a lot about the process of troubleshooting "way back when".

I still think replacing the mic is the easiest thing to do here.

Best of luck!

I hear you, but the question that remains to be answered is whether or not the adapter is even supposed to be able to record audio. I'm thinking it might only be able to transmit audio, like if you were to use it with a pair of lighting headphones.
