Formatting cells in Numbers

I have a Numbers spreadsheet where 2 cells were formatted as numbers and everything worked fine. Those 2 cells have now changed to automatic format and I cannot get them to change back to numbers. If I enter an integer into these cells they then do revert back to number formatting, but as soon as I change back to a number with a decimal point they again go back to automatic. It seems that Numbers will only accept integers.
