iPad turns itself off for no apparent reason

Device:

  • 1st Gen 12.9" iPad Pro
  • Running iPadOS 17.7 (latest build it can run, apparently)

Problem:

  • The iPad will shut down regardless of charge level, more-or-less at random
  • First occurrence happened when plugged in over night, but it did not appear to have charged
  • Had to use the "If your iPad won't turn on or is frozen" page to get it to come back on, at which point it was at 3% battery.
  • Was eventually able to get it to charge to 100% over about 3-4 hours plugged into a 100 amp charger
  • Kept running for about a day (not being used, but the screen was responsive every time I checked on it)
  • Wife went to use it, and it shut down on her again after a few minutes.
  • Had to press-and-hold the top and front buttons to get it to restart again. Battery was still 99%.

There appears to be nothing physically wrong with the iPad from the outside. She's not doing anything specific with the device when it shuts off. No error codes that I can find to explain why it is shutting down. Not sure what to try next to get this to stop occurring.

The symptoms that you describe suggest an issue with the iPad battery. Unexpected shutdown can occur if the battery is unable to sustain peak-load when called upon - despite the battery seemingly indicating a good level of charge. If unexpected shut-down does not occur while the iPad is connected to its Power Adapter, the issue is almost certainly due to a problem with the iPad battery.

If you continue to experience difficulties, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support - and request a remote diagnostic test. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:
