App Store charges for canceled subscriptions

I canceled my free trial 3-4 days ago both on the app and in the “subscriptions” section of iOS account, but today the App Store charged me for the subscription. There’s nothing to cancel because I already canceled it. So what can I do to get a refund and to stop Apple from doing this next week?

Review the information in this support article by clicking on the link ➔ If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support

If you subscribed to this in the EU from a third party, see: About purchases not billed through the App Store or the App Store’s In-App Purchase system - Apple Support instead.

Notes:

• "If you signed up for a free or discounted trial subscription and you don't want to renew it, cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends."

• Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription.

• An existing subscription will normally continue until the end of its term and may then renew automatically. Stopping automatic renewal is effectively canceling it. "If you don’t see Cancel Subscription, then the subscription is already canceled and won't renew." The "Expires" date means the current subscription will just run until then. Note special conditions for some countries: About canceling subscriptions in Germany, Israel, South Africa, or Türkiye - Apple Support

• Read the article to see what to do about subscriptions that do not appear in your list. If you still can't find a subscription, contact Apple Support using the link at the end of the support article.

• Canceling a subscription does not automatically start a refund.

Why do people post before reading? You’re admonishing me for something that doesn’t apply to my case. Please go back and read the post before copy/pasting text that’s available elsewhere. The app is called “Plantin”. I canceled the subscription both ways - through Apple and through the app at least 3 days before I was charged. You may not have understood my post. You have not said where you started the free trial. Specifically for Plantin, you can start the free trial directly with the developer and that bypasses Apple's ability to manage the subscription, which means you can only cancel a subscription by using the methods they provide and any charges that occur after you have cancelled using their methods is up to them to cancel. Their website makes it clear that a subscription started on their website can only be cancelled using their methods.

Since you did not include the exact description of the charge, there is no way to know whether the subscriptions you are being charged for is the one that is managed by Apple or one that is managed by the developer. To be clear, when you start a trial with the developer directly on their website it cannot be cancelled by Apple in the normal way to cancel in-app subscriptions. And if you started a subscription using an in-app purchase, it cannot be cancelled by contacting the developer directly. It would make no sense to start a subscription/free trial directly with the developer and also from an in-app subscription as that would only create 2 subscriptions.

You also seem to be confused about the timing of the subscription that Limnos posted about. You said "I canceled my free trial 3-4 days ago" and Limnos posted "You didn't say when you canceled it other than 3-4 days ago". The point about 24 hours is that a free trial needs to be cancelled at least 24 hours before the free trial ends. It is apparent you did not understand because you replied "Apple charged me today, when they shouldn’t have. 3 days is more than 24 hours". Nothing was said about when you will be billed and it is often not the case that you would be billed immediately or within 24 hours.

As you can see, your post was read carefully and we can only work off the information you have provided. Upvotes/Downvotes make no difference to us and your tone seems like you think that would punish us. I would suggest changing your tone and stick to the facts if you are actually looking for a solution.

  • What is the app?
  • What is the exact description of the charge?

Cancelling a subscription in an app does not cancel subscriptions that are managed by Apple. It could be that you signed up for the free trial with the developer directly. This is common with links provided by Social Media or website advertisements, where you are directed to the website to start the trial. When using this method, the subscription is not being managed by Apple and the developer is billing you directly. With the information requested we may be able to point you in the right direction if this is what happened to you.

I wrote “I canceled my free trial 3-4 days ago” (both ways) and Apple charged me today, when they shouldn’t have. 3 days is more than 24 hours. The text you copied and pasted is the first thing you see when you Google the issue; so I posted this BECAUSE it’s exceptional. I’m waiting to hear back from Apple but I wanted to flag this for users in case others are seeing the same glitch.
