Had the same issue. AOL mail was not updating. Was super frustrating. To fix: go into my iPhone settings>Mail>choose email account, then delete it. After deleting that aol email, I then select to “Add Account” to add the email account back. I had to login with password credentials as usual. But my email account was restored and email updated. I did that process for each AOL account I have. All are fine now.
My guess is that AOL updated something and it broke something with 3rd party connections/logins. But who knows. Their support is not available on wknds even if you have a premium account. :/

After a week of doing doing every suggestion in this string, here is what worked. Please download the AOL first so you have access to your emails. Go to Settings > be sure to update your software. No fix? Go to Settings > General> Transfer or Reset iPhone>select Reset and choose Reset Network Settings> Still No fix? Delete the email app on your phone and go into the app store and download the Mail app again. Once it loads, open the mail app. Choose the AOL third party option and sign in with your AOL user name and password. This should download your mail and resolve the issue. I found this information on You Tube and followed it "to the letter". It worked very well. I hope this helps everyone!
I deleted the email account then added it back and all is good now
I could not refresh any of my emails so I went into the settings and I had to re-enter my password and reverify
Easy to fix - just go to Settings, then Mail and RESET YOUR PASSWORD. Worked on my iPad.
when this happened before I downloaded the AOL app and kept it just incase. I’ll use that until it’s fixed.
I entered mail and it saiud there was a problem and the password had been eliminated so I had to re enter and now its working.
Question how can I phone take out my password on AOL?
Just delete and reinstall in settings
I have the same issue saying the attachment has not been downloaded from the server. Sometines this is resolved when I reboot the Iphone.
I also have the issue that some mails can take up to an hour or more to get to my in Box.
Until they fix the glitch, you have to go to aol.com to retrieve your mail not the app.
Same thing with me and started two days ago on 10-23. This happened once before, years ago, and I don't remember what I did. I'll delete the app and download it again. It's ipad and iphone. Annoying.
I thought it was just me, have the app on phone now and go to website on laptop for now
I kept the AOL app. I know I could try deleting the email account in the original iPhone mail app however, I’m liking the AOL app, mail, news and the quickness of mail opening. On the iPhone mail app I often got the mail has not been downloaded from the server issue.
Yes, AOL app. looked pretty good, but it won't open/preview any Pages documents when attached to an email. (I email myself a Pages database doc so I have it with me). So I had to go back to blue mail... just needed to update password (in settings) to fix this problem.
