How can I recover missing download icon on iMac?

Up until a few days ago all my downloads were in a file visible as an icon on the row of icons on the bottom of my iMac screen, with the Safari, Maps, Settings, Trash, icons etc. I tried to drag one of the files to an email I was sending, kind of stuttered clicked, and suddenly the icon with all the downloaded documents was gone. I can still get to downloaded documents by manually going through the File, Open, etc. process, but it was so much easier when they were all sitting in the icon.

In the Finder menu bar, click Go > Home or press Shift-Command-H.

Locate the icon for the Downloads folder in the window that opens. Drag that Downloads folder icon onto the Dock in the area just to the right of the separator bar.

Find the folder where the downloads are and try dragging the Icon to the Dock. Also, you can create your own keyboard shortcut to the download's folder. Finally, if you don't like where the downloads folder is located you can change the defaults download folder to go where you please, for example the Desktop. I changed my downloads to go to a folder on my Desktop and then found an iCon I liked for the downloads and dragged that into the folder's properties (Command + I)

  • To open the Downloads folder on a Mac, you can use the keyboard shortcut Option-Command-L. You can also click the Download button in the upper-right corner of the window to display the Download list. By default, Safari saves downloaded files to the Downloads folder in the Dock. You can also option-click a link to the file or double-click the file in the downloads list.
  • Tip: To change where downloaded items are saved on your Mac, choose Safari > Settings, click General, then click the “File download location” pop-up menu and choose a location. Clear the downloads list: In the downloads list, click Clear.

Thanks. But when I tried Command L my safari Icons (Facebook, Yahoo, etc.) appeared, not my downloaded files. Tried Settings - General - but then 'File Download Locator' wasn't an option. I can open a download from my list of downloads but can't attach them. How can one add or delete an icon on the bottom row of the computer? The down arrow in the circle in the upper right hand corner only lists five downloads and not the most recent five.
