Can't boot to USB on iMac

I use an iMac 2007 with Ubuntu 24 but every time I try booting to a bootable installer of Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan it will always fail and boot to the hard drive so I could use some help.

Details help. Repeating what is effectively “it doesn’t work” unfortunately doesn’t. Old Macs can have trouble around booting Internet Recovery too, as that was just becoming supported, and an incautious Linux unstall can clobber the recovery support.

Does the OS X 10.11 boot fail with any error messages? If so, what are they?

Where did this OS X 10.11 bootable installer come from? (Did you build it with another Mac? Was it given to you?)

How are you booting the OS X 10.11 installer? (With the Alt key held?)

Tried booting Recovery with Option-Command-R? (That may not work. As mentioned, this Mac is old enough that its recovery boot options are limited.)

Tried both an SMC reset and NVRAM reset, then tried booting the installer, and also tried booting Internet Recovery?
