How to fix Photo metadata issues in iOS 18?

It appears that IOS 18 messes about with the metadata in photos. This is seen if you look the photo information and the time the photo was taken. There is an "adjust" button, and it shows the correct time as the "adjusted" time, and the "original" time is some different time. The effect is that when you import the photos into the Mac, it shows the "original" time, not the "adjusted" (correct) time. All the 159 photos I took yesterday now import as taken at 12.00am, and appear in a completely random order. I spent a long time on the phone talking to Apple Support about this and the only thing they could tell me is that seems to be a "one-off" during the update, and the only solution they could offer is to go through each of the 159 photos and manually adjust the time in Photos on the Mac. Apple were unable to offer a satisfactory explanation, but the agent did say he would report the issue, (he said his did the same thing, so it is not just a problem specific to me. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and has anybody found a workaround?

Further conversations with the Apple Support Photos experts have now confirmed that this is a known problem that they are working on. There seem to be two issues, firstly, that Photos on the iPhone is showing the "original" time a photo was taken as an incorrect timem and the "adjusted" time as the correct time. The adjustment is inconsistent, ie the variation can be from a few seconds to hours. The second issue is that when importing photos into the Photos app on a Mac, the times are shown randomly. There is a workaround, which is instead of using the "import" feature in Photos, to use Airdrop. This seems to work and gives the correct time. The adjustment Ange73 mentioned when taking photos in a different time zone, is expected behaviour, if your phone is set to automatically adjust the time, because it will show the time taken as the time of the time zone you are in. Hopefully Apple will release an update for Mac and iPhone shortly which corrects the problems.

josekimber1- I think I may have worked out what the issue is. The new photo library is sorting photos by local time, which for me is GMT Uk time and any photos taken on my phone in a different time zone (I have just returned from holiday) have been automatically adjusted by 1 hour so rather than showing 14:20 for example they now are 13:20 plus 1 hr (GMT+1). The imported photos from my camera have not been automatically adjusted so this is why they are out of sync with my iPhone photos. I have had to adjust all my imported photos by 1 hour. They seem to sit in the right place now although technically the time is not correct. Hope that makes sense. I’m not sure if yours are doing something similar. Our clocks also went back by one hour so not sure if that may have added to the issue. It took me ages to understand what has been going on. I hope you can get yours sorted.

I am using the native iPhone camera app to take the photos, and photos to view them. It seems that there is an "adjust" feature in the info window in the photos app. There are two times displayed, an "original" and and "adjusted" time. The Original time seems to be randomly assigned, and the Adjusted time is the correct time when the photos was taken. The time shown in the info on the iphone is correct, the issue occurs when you import them into photos on the Mac. The photos appear in random order, with random times on them. It seems that the ability to sort a library by filename no longer exists, you can only sort them by time. Or at least I have not found out how to do it.

I view my photos on iPhone or iPad so not sure how they are behaving on a Mac. When I import from my camera all the correct dates and times are also imported so I don’t need to make any adjustments. The two times do match though, although there shouldn’t be an adjusted time as I haven’t changed it! They sit under the correct date in the library, just not in time order. I’m a bit OCD with stuff like this so it’s driving me crazy. I really hope Apple pick up on this and provide a fix

Ange 73, are your photos stored on the phone or in iCloud? I am not sure whether this makes any difference.

Apple has released an update to iOS 18 today (18.1) but it does not seem to have fixed the issue. The amount of time adjustment it shows for each image varies from one image to the next, some are out by a few seconds, some by much longer. It does not make any sense, particularly as the "adjusted" time is the correct time, and the "original" time appears to be random. It would be interesting to know whether storing photos in iCloud rather than on the phone has an effect on this. I don't use iCloud for storing photos, I store them on my phone.
