Why is my Apple Watch Series 9 update taking so long to complete?

I’m trying to pair my s9 with my iPhone 16 pro, both are new and never paired before. Have updated my phone to the latest stable version 18, watch required update before pairing but stuck on update, every time after a few hours updating, it just suddenly starts from the beginning. I tried with the whole of tricks that I found over internet none of them worked also let’s mention I have a good stable wifi internet and tried with data as well. Over last 2days it consumed more than 20G bandwidth, is it enough for a 2.1G update? How I suppose to fix it

Any chance you are using a VPN connection? If yes, disable it and try again to install the update.

If no VPN, did you already try these suggestions?

...

Try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your Apple Watch is connecting properly to its charger
  2. Restart your Apple Watch.
  3. Restart your paired iPhone.
  4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.

If the update won't start:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General > Storage.
  3. Delete the update file.
  4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.

Every time the update fails, the iPhone will download a new complete firmware package, to make sure that the downloaded data is not corrupted.

To update your watch you will need a fast Wi-Fi network and both devices have to use the same Wi-Fi.

I also make sure that my iPhone and Apple Watch are being charged during that time, and sitting right next to each other.

I tried using both a VPN on and off. After three days failing, finally it is updated in about 5 hours. Updating my iPhone to version 18.0 and 18.1 each took I supposed 30 minutes without any issues.

For the Apple Watch, updating is weirdly slow and doesn’t have a resume feature. To better understand, it consumed almost 30 GB to download an update that only took up 2.2 GB.
