Does searching photos by description work on a Mac?

Supposedly, Apple says, "Photos search lets you find photos and videos simply by describing what you’re looking for." Is that supposed to be true on a Mac? I don't see any way to do it on an M2 MacBook Air.

From How to get Apple Intelligence - Apple Support:

To get started with Apple Intelligence after you update your device, go to Settings, tap or click Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap or click Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist. Apple Intelligence is usually available for activation within a few hours of joining the waitlist, though wait times can vary. You will receive a notification when you can activate it on your device. On-device Apple Intelligence models will begin to download after activation.

Not the most obvious sign posting, but it isn't enough just to upgrade to iOS/iPadOS 18.1 or macOS 15.1. Regional and language settings may need to be adjusted if you are not based in the US, along with the need to manually activate the features and potentially wait while they get installed in the background.

I did try the "new" Siri after the update today, but when I asked for something I had in my photo collection, "beautiful woman in mayan clothes" it delivered 6 pictures of men who were not Mayan and not in my photos. So, whatever Siri is now meant to do, it isn't that. Maybe Apple doesn't intend to give Macs search by photo description, or at some indeterminate date. I keep Siri active to set an alarm and tell me the time or temperature.

Well I don't know what it is actually supposed to be able to do yet, but you could make use of this feedback route, although I suspect it is really intended for reporting inappropriate content: Use Report a Concern to share feedback about Apple Intelligence - Apple Support.

Graffiti worked well for me. And I've tried a couple of others where it has picked up on text in one image and connected that to other photos taken at the same event. Hopefully these features get better over time.

I assume that you've enabled Apple Intelligence under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and allowed some time for things to get set up. Difficult to know exactly what it supposed to be capable of, but I searched for Seasick Steve in the Photos app and it returned 55 images and videos from an album launch party I went to in June. I hadn't tagged any of the photos. I'm mildly impressed.

No I haven't, thanks. For some reason — and I am dumbfounded that it didn't happen — Apple provided me no information at all about that necessity.

(Two minutes later...) Now that I look in settings, the only option available to me is to join an Apple Intelligence waiting list. So, did the update today actually provide any AI features to the Mac? At the top of this page it says, "Apple Intelligence is now available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac!"

Now that AI is installed, and the region is correct and all that, I still haven't discovered any way to tell the Photos app to find anything by description, as Apple claims is possible. Is there actually a way? Even if you tell Siri to do it in Photos, it still just delivers photos from the internet. I've yet to find an AI feature I can use for anything. I want AI to give me the instructions to use AI.

Thanks for responding again. It's disappointing that I can't say, "Siri, show a beautiful woman in the Photo's app," but, as you say, that's impossible. So, at your suggestion, I just typed "beautiful woman" in the Photos search box and it found none though there are quite a few. Could it possibly be that Apple doesn't consider "beautiful" objective enough to search? Fair enough, so I typed just "woman," and all that Photos found were a few screen shots with the word "woman" in them, but no photo of any woman. How complicated is this description search supposed to be?
