macOS Sequoia 15.1 update printer problem

I updated my m1 MacBook Air today. I cannot use my Epson 630 printer anymore. Is there a way to use it with my computer? Please advise, thank you. Philgo

FIXED! (for me at least)

Decided to have another go.

  • Deleted all printers in System Settings/Printers & Scanners.
  • Uninstalled everything via the Epson uninstaller.
  • When I checked to see if there were any leftovers I discovered there was a whole bunch of stuff still in Mac/Library/Printers - I deleted everything in that folder. Checked Home/Library/Printers too but it was empty.
  • Went to Epson's support page for my printer, set my OS to Mac 15+ and downloaded everything. I noticed that the driver was dated October 4, 2024. I installed absolutely everything - even the stuff I didn't really need. Ran the Epson updater to see if I had the most recent versions and the only thing it updated was itself [roll eyes]
  • Rebooted my machine and checked System Settings/Privacy & Security/Local Network for anything that might need enabling - there was only the Epson Updater and Epson Updater Agent and they were already enabled.
  • Switched on the printer, went back to System Settings/Printers & Scanners and added the printer.
  • Test print worked. Test scan also. Hurrah!

Now I don't know whether it was a slightly newer driver (I'm sure I'd tried that version before) or whether it was deleting the orphan files in the Library folder that the uninstaller missed, but I'm pleased to report that everything is working as it should (for me).

Of course this might not work for everyone but hopefully there might be a step that I took that might help someone else.

I solved my problem today. I first downloaded the latest driver for "15x" at the Epson site; it didn't specify 15.1. And it didn't fully specify my Epson Stylus Photo 1400 but instead just mentioned "Stylus Photo" along with some others; this was a driver that was added fairly recently (late October). Despite the vagueness of all this I proceeded only to find it didn't initially work. I then shut off my Epson printer (didn't bother to disconnect the power cable to it) and then shut down my Mac and rebooted. At that point the printer finally resumed working. (And shutting down, rebooting, etc. had not previously worked; hence the new driver seems to be what did the trick.) Hope this helps some.

I am on 15.2 and spend days trying everything I could find. Nothing worked. Finally, after some digging around I found an option that worked for me! I went through the whole process as 1-6 didn't work for me.

  1. On your Mac, open the Apple menu, select System Preferences or System Settings, and then select Sharing.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If there is no name in the Computer Name field, enter a name for your computer.
    • If there is a name in the Computer Name field, rename your computer.

3. Close the window.

4.Open the Apple menu, select System Preferences or System Settings > Print & ScanPrint & Fax, or Printers & Scanners > [your printer name] > Options & Supplies.

5.Select General, if necessary. Enter your Computer Name as the Location and click OK.

6.Try printing again. If you can print now, you're done. If you can't print, go to the next step.

7. Turn off your product.

8. Open the Apple menu, select System Preferences or System Settings > Print & ScanPrint & Fax, or Printers & Scanners > [your printer name] and click -. Click Delete Printer and close the window.

9. Open your hard drive and do each of the following:

    • Select Library > Printers and drag the Epson folder to the trash.
    • Select Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources and drag the Epson Printer Name.gz file to the trash.
    • Select Library > Caches and drag the Epson folder to the trash.

10. Close the hard drive and empty the trash on your Mac.

11. Restart your Mac, turn on your product, and then reinstall the driver for your product.

I am pretty sure it was the extra files in Library PPDs and Caches as I had already deleted the Library > Printers folder. Hope this helps someone out there. What a heck of a time dealing with this.

Finally! After multiple attempts. Ensure Firmware is up to date on the printer. Cancel / Close any Epson installer, because it fails with: The product was not found.

*Seiko added in background and legacy driver messages may appear during all this*

Install the latest OSX print driver manually from Epson for your model.

Install the “scanner” driver and utility too.

Use the Epson Scan 2 utility to find IP address, but do not select it yet. Close or cancel.

GO TO System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Remove AirPrint printer/scanner

Add a new printer, scanner, or fax…

Click the [Web Globe icon] for IP. Select Protocol > IPP . Enter the IP from Epson Utility or your printer menu: Settings > General > Network Status > Wired LAN / WiFi and scroll down to IP.

Name (below)—> rename the printer instead of IP address.

Use: Select Software > your printer.

Allow Epson Printer (EPIJAutoSetupTool2 or similar to access network)

Now open Epson Scan 2 Utility and select + to add a scanner. The wheel will spin and should detect scanner. Click your IP and then OK.

GO TO System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services (during Setup turn off later) Allow Epson; and EpsonNet Setup if run before.

System Settings > Privacy & Security > Allow the Epson tools you see.

Run Epson Software Updater. It updates itself in Applications > Epson Software

Check ? Yes

Allow > agree > allow etc. Check ? Yes (or similar)

Allow notifications pop up. Allow using Options > Allow

Remove Epson ScanSmart to trash.

Run Epson Software Updater and find several new items. I don’t need Photo+; Remote print; nor Scan Smart; and I don’t recommend EpsonNet Config SE (but it gives you the user manual). Then click “Install.” Notice the warnings: Seiko added in background message; and legacy driver messages appear during all this. Software success Quit or Continue/Close.

Still scanning now, yay!

Still No Printing.

You can now address the printer issues in Print Center—as you may notice; fail and ink monitor issues; or “i” for info gives errors such in the printer utility, I.e. communication error. Allow Epson (Commandtoescp) or (rastertoescpii) when printing a file.

Now run Epson uninstaller Applications > Epson Software and remove the printer driver ONLY and ink level program ONLY; go back to System Settings and remove the IPP printer. Remember keep the scanner drivers and other programs.

Add now add the printer in System Settings > Printers & Scanners; choose the Airprint bonjour printer; with the default printer type (and it will pick AirPrint driver) Now it works. Ink levels still work; and Now it prints.

I have the same issue with my Epson ET-2750 - visible on the WiFi but unable to connect for printing or scanning. I tried updating the driver from Epson. I was hopeful as it came out quite recently (September), but then I remembered that the problem only arose when I updated from 15.0 to 15.1 last week, so I guess I'll have to wait for an update - either from Apple or Epson - or both!

In the meantime connecting via a USB cable still seems to work...

Everything in my Privacy and Security > Local Network is enabled and still no joy. I have seen reports that enabling an app called 'rastertoescpII' here can help but I've never seen it. Even if I could locate it on my system it isn't possible to add apps - the enable/disable option only exists for apps that request it.

Over on the Digital Photography forum a user reports:

"I just spent some time on the phone with Epson support and it seems at present, Epson does not support Mac OS 15.1 on many of its printers"

It's clear that Apple has changed some crucial link in the chain. A lot of printers are affected, not just Epson. It is unlikely that the solution will come from Apple as its usual response in instances like this is to fold its arms, stand back and wait for the developers to sort it out.

So it's a waiting game...

Go to the Epson site to see if they have a new driver or utility for your printer. I have the same problem with my Epson Stylus Photo 1400 after upgrading to 15.1. The Epson site seems to have new drivers only through the Sequoia 15 iteration, not the 15.1, but they say they add to these over time, so perhaps there will be a fix soon.

Hi I had the same problem with my MacBook Air not recognising my HP printer after uploading 15.1.1. Apple support tried numerous fixes uninstalling printers etc etc but nothing worked. In the end we decided to back up my laptop followed by reloading the software. It took a while but when the upload had finished the printer could be reinstalled and prints fine now.

Link for reloading software is here

The Epson documentation for that Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830 is disappointing.

I’ll assume Epson support got you to current firmware, and restarted your Wi-Fi among other steps.

Have you removed the Epson drivers, and tested with AirPrint?

Fabulous thank you. This worked for me. Found an Epson printer file/thing called Epson Printer (rastertoescpll) that was OFF. Once I toggled this on, the printer immediately printed something I had queued. Thank you so much. I've been battling with this since upgrading to IOS 15.1.1 and couldn't work out why it would only print when I restarted my Mac (and only on starting up with login details). This is the fix for me. Thanks!
