Have you made ICloud Mail personal domain work?

When I switched domain hosts I cancelled my existing email provider with the intention of using my personal domain with iCloud Mail. The new host entered the values Apple provided, but for a month now my personal domain email account has been offline. Neither Apple tech nor the host know how to make it work. Can anyone suggest a domain host where you have actually been able to make your personal domain account work with iCloud? (Or as I would use it, with Apple Mail.)

I finally made it work, after conversations with six Apple employees, three of whom are "senior." They were patient and helpful, and the last one noticed that one of the values required for connection to the web host had changed since Apple first supplied it to me.

One thing I hadn't anticipated is that all mail sent to my custom domain is now to be delivered to the iCloud inbox. My former IMAP mailboxes for the domain are no longer valid since the account is offline. I can't see how the personal domain can be online since doing so means to create another iCloud mailbox account which would simply duplicate the one that exists. Actually, Apple Mail is sending every test email back and forth between my iCloud address and the personal domain address to Junk. So, is free iCloud personal domain mail worth it? Not if you want full-featured email. It's missing everything except send and receive. If someone else has figured how to do better than I've done, please share.
