EPS Preview in Sequoia

Has anyone found a fix for not being able to preview .eps files in the current Apple OS yet? It's messed up that this is a thing. I have literally hundreds of eps files that I use for work that have been downloaded from sites like iStock and I now I have no idea what they are unless I open them. This idea that .eps file are redundant is insane. They are still used all the time. And that they are vectors for malware? I've never had an issue and I've been using them for decades. This shows how out of touch Apple is with the people who (are trying to) use their products out in the real world.

have you tried this?

No icon preview for eps-files in Monterey - Apple Community

1. Copy the "Illustrator.qlgenerator" from "/System/Library/QuickLook" to your desktop or any other folder you have read/write access to.
2. Open "Illustrator.qlgenerator" by right clicking it and select "Show package contents".
3. Open "Info.plist" in the "Contents" folder with a text editor.
4. Find the line "<string>com.adobe.illustrator.ai-image</string>"
5. Insert "<string>com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript</string>" below it with the same indentation and save the "Info.plist" file.
6. Copy "Illustrator.qlgenerator" to "/Library/QuickLook"

If you did everything right, you should now have .EPS previews back again. That's a workaround until apple fixes it in the System/Library, hopefully soon.

The idea that "virtually no one is supporting this nearly dead file format" when it's the only vector format provided by the stock giants like Getty, iStock, and the like, is pretty messed up. Tons of designers rely on sites like that and we are being screwed over. Let us take the "risk" with eps files. Apple could give a warning, but cutting preview support is nuts.

Thank you for suggesting a solution. I’ll try it and post a note here, if it works in Sequoia.

Unfortunately I now have to wait for my Mac to be fixed by a third party. Why not Apple? Because Apple said that 5 years is the expected lifespan of their hard disks, so if I need to replace a 2019 hard disk because it failed, they won’t do it. *sigh* I’ve been using Macs since the SE, and it didn’t use to be this hard to upgrade. (I really miss Tekserve.) And. . . I still don’t know if I saved all the critical EPS files.

Have you actually downloaded a vector image from Getty or iStock? Often they will provide raster and vector versions of the same file. The raster versions come in 3 or 4 sizes/resolutions, and they provide a single eps file for the vector option. I have downloaded hundreds of vector files from iStock for my work in film, so I'm sorry to disillusion you but real vectors are indeed provided... and they are always in .eps format.

Then despite your 45 years of experience in prepress, you are doing something fundamentally wrong. This is a download page for a vector image in iStock. It's all very self-explanatory. As you can see, the options are JPG or EPS. They even explain what each file format is in basic language. I've been working in design for 30 years, so I know full well what I'm talking about. lol

That is obviously correct. Never used iStock before. The bananas also have no transparencies, so even as an EPS, it will remain vector.

Our clients insisted everything we used came from Getty (they would tell us which file to pick up, or they'd send it).

Check Getty's supposed vector page:

Then click on any item. Doesn't matter which one. Your choices are always four price points. All described as 300 dpi, despite supposedly being vector.

If they were truly vector, there would be no need for four price points. No matter which one you purchase, they are always raster.

And yes, I goofed. As long as there are no transparencies of any kind in the artwork, it will remain vector.

Raster or vector makes no difference. I can see a preview of .svg and .ai files just fine. Apple just needs to allow those of us who want to use the workaround to view eps files to take that into our own hands. It's a process that takes enough effort that the casual user wouldn't do it, and it allows us access to a common file format. We'd accept any responsibility of risk. I've opened and saved thousands of EPS files and never had a problem.

Wow, who hurt you, bro? Have you ever gotten a debilitating virus from an EPS file? Have you ever even used an EPS file? Why is your side of the argument always so aggressive? I don't want my Mac OS to do anything other than give me a wee little Quicklook thumbnail preview of my files. Or allow me to do the Illustrator.qlgenerator work-around that the last OS seemed to be OK with. Trust me, I know that Apple won't fix this. This is the company that took headphone jacks off their iPhones to sell more ear buds. They will never backstep on this. The point of this thread was to see if anyone had found a new work around. There are smart people out there who may have. Thanks for your feedback though.

People who wage pointless battles on the internet for years.

You see? This is my point. This thread has gone on for way too long. This thread was even started years too late.

You are getting confused over the replies. I never said anything about viruses in EPS files. I have no problem with EPS files. I can do absolutely anything I want with them, including viewing them in previews if I want. 😄

Have you ever even used an EPS file?

When macOS Ventura first came out, I actually wrote a free EPS viewing/previewing tool for people to use to help them convert their EPS files while they still could. But still, many people never got the memo and continued on as if nothing would ever change. Then when they installed yet another new, radically changed operating system, they were upset at all the changes.

Why is your side of the argument always so aggressive?

Because I get tired of seeing the same, utterly pointless posts year, after year, after year.

I don't want my Mac OS to do anything other than give me a wee little Quicklook thumbnail preview of my files.

How do you expect that to happen? The same kinds of licensing difficulties that caused Apple to remove it will also prevent anyone else from making such a wee little tool. I'll be happy to do it for you if you want, but I guarantee that you would never describe my fee as "wee little".

Or allow me to do the Illustrator.qlgenerator work-around that the last OS seemed to be OK with.

You spend too much time on the internet. That hack never worked.

There are plenty of smart people. But the smartest people went into law, not computer science. Those people wrote some very clever legal contracts and licenses specifically designed to cause this exact problem.

There is an easy solution. You just need to download Xcode, Ghostscript, and write yourself an app with a modern Quicklook preview plugin.
