Unable to print using my printer connect to MacBook Air with a USB to USB-C adapter

I bought a new MacBook Air 15". The ports are Thunderbolt 4 which I assumed were USB-c. I bought some run of the mill adapter to hook up my printer. The printer has a regular USB end, so I got a USB to USB-C adapter. Everything fits but print prompt will stop and say "stopped, filter, failed". UGH. What do I need to do to by-pass filter, or purchase a correct adapter?

Does your printer have a driver that is compatible with macOS 15.0 (Sequoia)? If not, is it AirPrint-compatible?

Also, since you have an Apple-Silicon-based Mac notebook, have you allowed your printer to connect to your Mac?

Canon's support site for the MG2520 offers scanner drivers for Sequoia, but no printer drivers that I can see. The closest thing is a printer driver for Sonoma. Whether it works under Sequoia or not – I have no way to say.

This thread on the Canon forums suggests that you "Go into System Preferences->Security and see if there are any alerts requesting disk or file access authorization." (This is a tip from a user, not from Canon.)
