Studio Display reference mode via Macbook Pro?

On a studio display, does reference mode work when connected to a MacBook Pro? When connected a studio display to a MacBook Pro (16 inch/M1 Pro/OS monterey), a default mode works fine, but a reference mode doesn't seem to work on a studio display. I wanted to see if I can turn a reference mode on both MBP and studio display. I only tried the display in a store so I don't have the unit for more experiment. Is it possible or am I missing some settings? Thanks in advance.
