Can I have the battery replaced and will there be any issues using the phone in the United states. It does not take an Esim and needs a sim card.

You’ll want to discuss the battery replacement with Apple.

You may not have an iPhone sold in Japan, if you have no eSIM support. You probably have an iPhone originally sold in China mainland, Hong Kong, or Macao. Those are dual-SIM, with no eSIM.

Whether a US carrier supports the particular iPhone is up to the particular carrier, as well. Contact your carrier.
