setting up webmail account on iphone 14

I have my own domain and recently changed host providers. My previous host provider had office 365. I've moved to a new provider and they are using webmail. I'm trying to be able to access my webmail account via the mail app on my phone. However, it isn't working. I'm entering all the correct information for the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server, but it tells me I need to enter a password. The password is in the setup config and it is accurate. I've tried both IMAP and POP with the same results. I've done this several times and twice it tried to authenticate and never came back. It didn't time out, it just kept "spinning". I had to shut the phone down twice because of this. I'm at my wits end here and need to be able to access my email via phone.

Remove the account, and re-add it.

If that fails, enter the username and password in both places; in the POP or IMAP settings (what iOS 17 calls “incoming mail server”), and also in the SMTP or ESMTP settings (“outgoing mail server”).

I would agree, but the same credentials are working between my desktop and the host provider. I certainly will reach out to them, but anticipate their response is going to be that it is a problem on the phone, not their platform and as such, they will send me back here.

Ask them for the host and port settings, too.

The SMTP server will almost certainly have the SSL/TLS setting enabled, as well.

Did you try this:

Mail > Accounts > select the account > Delete Account

Then re-add the account. this won’t effect mail stored locally, and won’t effect mail stored on the mail server.

Alternatively, Mail > Accounts > select the account > Account Settings > tap SMTP in the section labeled “outgoing mail server” > tap the appropriate SMTP or ESMTP mail server > enter the credentials and password and port settings and host for the outgoing mail server.

Thank you for the reply. I understand all that. I am following the instructions and when I get to the point where it wants to validate the account, I get the message, "No password provided for <account name>. Please go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password."

I AM entering the password when I add the account. Is there some other obscure place where I need to enter this password?

I have lost count of how many times I have done all that. I just tried adding the user and password for smtp and I got the message, " Cannot Send Mail the user name or password for "smtp...." is incorrect." It is the right password, I'm sure of that.

So I removed the user name and password from smtp and I got the message "account verified"! However, I sent a test email and it didn't come through to my phone. I did get it through to my PC.

It's been years since I've had to set up email on my phone and it was a few iphone versions ago, and I seem to remember having to put the password someplace else beside the incoming/outgoing server on the account set up. I've dug through everything in settings and can't find anyplace else to add the password.

Yes. I have deleted and readded the account many times. I have tried adding it using IMAP and I have tried adding it using POP. I've tried using the username and password on smtp and not. I have ensured the port settings and host names are correct. I've done all this so many times, I can recite each step in detail. Still, no email is coming through on this account.

Webmail is a user interface into mail. It works like the Mail app on iPhone. It’s all you need to access mail.

Many mail providers offer other means to access mail, in addition to webmail.

To configure a client such as Mail app on iPhone for accessing a mail server, you will need the credentials, ports, and related settings for the mail server; for both SMTP or ESMTP to send mail, and also credentials and settings for POP or (preferably) IMAP to receive and read mail.

The mail service provider has those details posted (somewhere), if they support access from user-provided mail clients, in addition to access from the mail provider’s webmail client.

If ypu have an existing account configured for the mail provider, remove it, and test again.

Some mail providers will detect and block failed accesses, which means any subsequent accesses — even with correct credentials — can fail. You’ll need to discuss that with the mail provider.

If your mail provider uses cPanel as their user interface, that has a mechanism for generating and displaying the exact correct settings for each user that has been configured in your cPanel control panel.
