Lost phone AIG AppleCare insurance dilemma

Applecare AIG will not cover insurance claim on lost phone if not logged in to an Apple ID , bought phone at Best Buy , spoke to an Apple Store manager and employees no one informed me of this clause nor did anyone provide a contract , Lost in the mail a gift to an elderly mother , theft or damage is not considered , in my case retrieval of Apple ID is delayed anywhere from 5 to 30 business days , anything can happen and if it does we’re out of luck , no recourse no excuses no circumstances, I owe the phone the insurance with no phone . anyone telling me you should have read the email assumes I have access to email , Gmail does not allow access except to the original phone that was lost or damaged, anyone saying it was explained to me wasn’t with me at Best Buy and the Apple Store .

It’s your responsibility to read the contract or insurance policy before you sign it.

Directly from Apple’s website:

  1. Theft and loss coverage requires you to have Find My enabled on your device at the time it is lost or stolen. Find My should remain enabled and your iPhone should remain associated with your Apple Account throughout the theft or loss claim process. During the theft or loss claims process, you will be asked to erase your missing device, disable it, and transfer ownership before you can be issued a new device.

  2. To ensure that you can sign in and access Find My, it’s important to remember your Apple Account and password and keep your account information up to date. If you use two-factor authentication for Apple Account, it’s recommended that you add an additional trusted phone number to your account so that you can receive the six-digit verification code required to sign in even if your iPhone is missing.

  3. After initiating your theft or loss claim with Apple, you will be asked to finalize your claim on AIG’s website at www.aigtheftandloss.com.

I am sorry for your difficulties, but you have posted to a user-to-user site. We are all users here......just like you.

Apple is not here. AIG is not here. They will not see your post or reply.

As users.....just like you.....we have no control over decisions that have been made by AIG or Apple.

Our advice.....likely worth about zero since it is free......seek legal help if you want to pursue this.

Wow, that's unfortunate, but this is a user to user only forum and we are not associated with Apple, nor can we help you. I honestly don't have any advice. Did you mail the phone your mother, or did BestBuy ship the phone to her? If you shipped the phone, seems you should be dealing with the shipper. Did you take out insurance on the phone if you shipped it?

i posted earlier and got replies from Apple employees, they do read this forum and it seems , they escalated the issue to AIG and confirmed they are working on policy changes. not gonna help me in anyway but hopefully to others in the future, if they apply the tiered swap policy this wouldn’t happen , tiered swap is when swapping phones an Apple ID must be logged in . It is a very simple change that can be implemented to prevent the gap in coverage

There are forum hosts (moderators, actually) who do read posts to ensure they don't violate the terms of use of the forum. One of them clearly saw your post and at least forwarded to someone at Apple who may be able to offer you help, which is good. Generally speaking however, Apple doesn't participate here, nor read the posts in this forum for user feedback. But I'm glad someone saw it and routed it for you.

I would still like to know who shipped the phone to your mother? BestBuy or you?

hi , I did not ship it , just mentioned some scenarios , yes shipping would be ideal coverage unfortunately I lost the phone at work , there is commercial coverage at my job , but the deductible is a $1000 so not worth the claim , small claims court could rule in my favor, but Apple will only provide their contact info (legal dept) to consumers advocates or lawyers , so there is a cost to pursue this matter

Then you were responsible for the phone. I'll be very surprised if Apple or AIG help you here.
