Microsoft Apps Cannot Find Recent Documents

I have a subscription to Microsoft 365 and use Word and Excel for Mac. (I don't think Windows on Mac is the right topic.)

Word and Excel recently say they cannot find documents in their Recent lists that appear when they are launched. Selecting a document in their Recent list gets a popup saying "Can't Open (filename) . This document is either deleted or not currently accessible."

Googling indicates that this is caused by a setting in the "Roaming Settings Disabled" registry key of Microsoft 365. I don't know how to deal with that.

The Recent list was a nice feature. How can I get it to work again?
