My iPad screenshots are 312kb,
My MacBook screenshots are 4.6MB and way too big for my purposes.
Is there a way (on Mac) to reduce screenshots before taking them in settings or somewhere?

I found the answer. Just change the format to something other than PNG.
4.6MB PNG is 1.3MB in a jpeg
All future screenshots will be smaller.😀
