Is your new camera an HDV camera like the Canon? You should be able to play the tapes back in that without any problem. The Canon HV10 shot video in 1080 60i, just like Sony cameras. I have the same problem with my HV10. It is a very common problem, the heads seem to accumulate a lot of grime, it could be from mixing tape stock, some tapes use a dry lubricant and some use a wet and they don't mix well together. If you only have the HV10 for tapes then you could try running a couple of cycles of a "head cleaning cassette" through it. You can pick one up at Best Buy, just follow the instructions.
