As now described, your iPad may simply be overheating when operating at maximum screen brightness - and is automatically reducing brightness to protect the iPad's battery from damage.

Well it starts bright then makes its own mind up to go dark
that sounds like an iPad issue not a generation issue ?
Conventional LCD screens often cannot provide sufficient brightness to be used in very bright ambient lighting - such as when being used outdoors in bright sunshine. This isn't a fault of the LCD screen, but is a fundamental limitation of the screen backlight used by LCD screen.
OLED screens can operate at significantly brighter levels - this screen technology being used by the fifth/sixth generation iPad Pro 12.9" - and the current iPad Pro M4 11" and 13" models - all of which use Apple's Retina XDR (OLED) display technology.
Literally it’s not too hot. I can take the phone out in the am. It’s v bright outside then just clicks into dark mode. For no reason.
I need to find a way of stopping this happening
does anyone have any bright ideas ???
It’s iPad Air 5th generation btw
